Figure D
Award-winning designer Alexander Julian provides tips for how to become a decorator by learning to think like one.
  • Start by using nature as your guide. Look at a great landscape, such as the misty vineyards of Napa Valley or the coral beaches of Key West (figure A), and incorporate those colors and textures into your home.

  • Think of your decor as clothing for your home, and decorate it as if you're putting together a clothing ensemble (figure B).

  • Think about how your furniture works for you and what you need it to do. One piece of furniture, such as a well-decorated chair (figure C), can be versatile enough to work in a number of settings.

  • Match the trim color to predominant hues in fabrics/rugs (figure D). Try reversing the trim and wall colors in adjoining rooms.

  • Add a bright color to a room or hallway that is adjacent to a more neutral room.
