First Step

Interior designer Victoria Posey says that the first step in designing a room is to look at the architecture. Before choosing a design element, you must define the space that you're designing: How is it built? Is it traditional or contemporary? What kind of moldings (see photo) and trim does it have? Does it have a fireplace, an elaborate window? Once you define the space, the other elements will fall into place.
