Comfortable Outdoor Patio Design on a Dime : Episode DOD-1408 -- More Projects »
Jeanne Chinn was excited when she bought her first house three years ago. But when her career as a martial artist took off, she found herself with little time to decorate.
The Dilemma She has begun renovating her living room into a master suite, and she needs a living space to spend time in during the project. The patio's concrete floor is cracked and unattractive. She has some outdoor furniture she'd like to use, but it needs some freshening up. The lighting fixtures also need to be reworked to create ambient lighting. The Solution Rearranging the patio will create defined areas in the new living space. A chandelier and wall sconces will give the space an indoor feel. A new terra-cotta color on the floor will warm it up, and new furniture cushions will bring the French-country theme to life.
Design coordinator Dave Sheinkopf gives a thrift-store rocker, along with Jeanne's existing furniture, new life with a fresh coat of sage-colored paint. New cushions in coordinated colors bring the look together.
A formal eating area gives Jeanne a great place to entertain friends. The rustic chairs are coated in clear enamel to protect guests from rust spots while maintaining the charm of the pieces. Mix-and-match vintage dishes play up the cottage theme even more.
Design coordinator Spencer Anderson mounts a fountain on the wall using a supportive cleat. He creates shutters to flank the patio door from reclaimed lumber to give them a rustic look and coats them in sage-green paint.
Host and interior designer Kristan Cunningham creates a hinged screen to place behind the sofa. She uses beadboard and tongue-in-groove redwood for the structure, leaving openings at the top of each panel for fabric insets. She weathers the piece by dry-brushing it for a translucent look. Next, she gets started customizing a jute rug. She lays out her design with painters tape and then goes over it with a dry-roller painting technique. She uses a stencil to add white detail where the tape lines cross.
The team gives the patio even more of an indoor feel by adding wall sconces and a chandelier.
Details such as a salvaged window with candle sconces and a fleur-de-lis stencil detail on the step risers help unify the look.
