Painted Sisal Rug

A sisal rug with a painted border adds decorative interest to an outdoor deck.
Materials:

3' x 5' plain sisal rug (or any natural fiber that hasn't been sealed)
lacquer masking tape
exterior latex paints
paintbrushes

Steps:

1. Tape-off the desired border width (press edges down firmly) and paint in chosen colors. Be sure not to put the paint on too thick because a thicker area could crack and possibly break off as people walk on it. Let dry and remove tape.

2. Add a design motif such as vines and leaves over the painted border and let dry (figure A). Allow the paint to cure for a few days before using the rug.
