Before
The Dilemma

Host and designer Lee Snijders meets up with the couple to discuss the project. He finds out that the floor needs new carpet, the windows need new treatments and the space is in desperate need of color. Barry would love to have the room designed in a colorful ethnic motif but with a modern sensibility. He would also like storage for his thousands of CDs and vinyl records, a stylish seating area and the ability to display his collection of platinum albums. Besides setting up the various drum sets, Snijders must also incorporate mood lighting to set the stage.

After
The Solution

The bare-bones storage space is transformed into a room perfect for hosting a jamming jazz session--here's how the design team makes it happen on the $1,000 budget:

  • The lackluster yellow walls are livened up with red paint. Before they apply the actual paint color, the walls are painted with a color-tinted primer.

  • The linoleum floor creates an acoustical nightmare so Snijders covers it with beige and red carpet. He first secures the beige base carpet then inlays the red one by cutting out the desired shape and dropping it into place.

  • Design coordinator Charles Burbridge gets creative with a drum-themed art piece. He cuts various drum shapes out of foam core and wraps them with lightweight batting and felt and secures with heavy-duty tape on the back. He then cuts accent pieces out of more felt and uses spray adhesive to hold them in place. Hot glue is used to hold the pieces together to form one large wall display.

  • Design coordinator Summer Baltzer takes on the task of finding the right lighting for the room. She brings in three lamps with telescoping bases and tops them with shades she's enhanced with a tea-stain finish and ribbon trim.

  • The existing storage piece is turned into a cozy seating nook. Baltzer adds a foam seat slipcovered in soft Ultrasuede. Colorful throw pillows add pizzazz.

  • New bookshelves provide the necessary storage for all of Barry's CDs and vinyl records. The team stains them a dark brown to complement the bold colors and enhance the ethnic look they're going for. They also add light bars to the top of each to illuminate Barry's extensive music collection.

  • The Bensons' platinum records are displayed above the seating nook and Barry's drums are set up to complete the new music room.
