The basement for the new addition has been excavated. The basement footer is prepped and the concrete is poured (figure A). The new basement will be linked to the existing basement and will be dug deeper to allow for more headroom not found in the home's existing basement. At the front of the house, old single-paned window sashes are being removed (figure B) to make way for new windows, which will be placed into the original mortise-and-tenon-style window frames.
Wood that was salvaged from a partition wall removed earlier (figure C) is used to replace damaged 1830s floorboards in the bedroom (figure D). To do this, contractor John Malm uses a regular table saw to create a shiplap joint (figure E)--a cut very similar to the traditional tongue-and-groove found in the original floorboards. In the bathroom, the plumber installs the new sink to complete the reconfiguration of the room's fixtures.
The drainage system for the new basement is installed (figure F), and new double-hung windows replace the home's original wooden windows (figure G). Finally, we get a tour of the new basement, then move to the first level where framing for the two-story addition begins (figure H).
