Joan Steffend and designer Peggy Sellwood transform a bland laundry room with warm Southwestern colors, rustic storage pieces and fanciful decorative accents. They paint the walls a deep terra-cotta color and stencil playful designs near a shelf and on the soffit. The insulation around the basement windows is hidden from view with a wood valance and potted flowers. The homeowner's cabinet is painted and put back in place near the sink with a stainless steel countertop. Extra storage is created with shutters, a store-bought cabinet and a dowel rod. Sellwood removes the back of the cabinet, attaches the shutters to the front and adds a dowel rod to hold clothes. The piece is finished with a blue-w ashed paint technique and attached to the wall. Finishing touches include a new ironing board cover, a wooden rag bin, a fun cowboy boot lamp and a colorful floorcloth.
