Shari Hiller and Matt Fox come up with decorating solutions for an upstairs work /study room with unusual features: French doors overlooking an interior balcony into the family room, a huge stairwall that is a part of both the upstairs study and downstairs family room, and a funky little alcove visible from the first floor.
Color and Pattern
Hiller discusses the step-by-step process necessary for selecting color and pattern in room decoration:
- Choose flooring first. A marquetry wood floor with a dark border pattern on light wood was chosen for the study.
- Select furniture. Dark wood furniture was selected to coordinate with the dark wood border on the floor.
- Select chair style. Comfort was important. Each piece was given the "sit test" before buying.
- Choose fabric. A book pattern was chosen for the study.
- Which sofa? A simple pattern was selected to harmonize with the busy pattern on the chair.
- What about the walls? Texture was needed since the wood floors were so smooth. A basket pattern was selected for below the chair rail, and a string pattern was chosen for above the rail.
- Choose paint. A middle range color was selected for the stairwall that works with both rooms upstairs and down. It was selected by viewing fabric and paper samples from both rooms together.
