Home-Office Halogen Lamps The bright light from tabletop halogen lamps is perfect for the home office or a reading area. Changing a halogen bulb is not something you want to do everyday, however. It's tricky because the oil on your fingertips can coat the delicate glass housing of the bulb and cause it to burst.
You'll always need to wear gloves or a protective wrapping whenever handling the bulb. Burnett prefers to use a plastic bag or piece of plastic wrap around her fingers. This way, she can still "feel" where the bulb needs to go. Another option is to use a paper towel.
Caution: Because the halogen bulbs burn much hotter than regular incandescent light bulbs, be sure to select a lamp that has been approved by the Underwriters Laboratory (UL listing), and be careful to position the lamp away from fabric draperies and clothing. Also, turn out lights when they are not in use. This reduces the heat that they generate and reduces the risk of the bulbs burning out.
