Rustic Urban Loft

A no-style bachelor's loft gets a modern but rustic makeover with lots of urban touches.

Homeowner Brian Coate and roommate, Brad Humpal, are at a loss for design ideas in their urban Columbus loft. With tall ceilings, exposed brick, poor lighting and oversized furniture, the living room poses several problems. Student designer Natalee Orr immediately sees potential and comes up with a design that is both modern and rustic, including custom furniture, bold color choices and industrial lighting.

Before: Mismatched Bachelor Style
When Coate and Humpal moved into the loft six months ago, they combined their furnishings the best they could but admit they're not very design savvy. They tore down drywall to expose a beautiful brick wall but damaged the brick and molding in the process. Plus, there's not much to divide the living area from the kitchen.
