Mimi and Chris Pratt recently moved into their dream home, a stunning 1935 classic charmer near the ocean. They love the place but have had trouble figuring out how to decorate the living room. They feel the space is extremely bland, lacking both personality and color, and that is also suffers from mismatched furnishings. That's where host and designer Karen McAloon comes into the picture. She signs on to help the Pratts figure out what style best suits them.

The Pratts think this living room has great potential, but they are paralyzed by their lack of vision for the space. The couches are dated and worn, just like the area rug, which is also too small for the space. Items of various styles are sprinkled throughout — there are Japanese shoji screens on the large windows behind the couch, a craftsman-style table and lamp across from that and Italian architecture prints above the loveseat. Though it might seem that these items are all vastly different, McAloon finds common threads in the classic and elegant forms of each. She concludes that their style is traditional yet updated.
