Contemporary, Colorful Living Room Design on a Dime : Episode DOD-1407 -- More Projects »
New homeowner Jackie Alfonso is having trouble decorating her large, awkward living area. She needs the Design on a Dime team to increase the functionality and visual interest in this bland living space for less than $1,000.
The Dilemma Jackie's open living area includes dining, living and home-office spaces, and she's having a hard time tying the three concepts together. The space is very neutral and could use a shot of rich color. Her current furnishings have country-style leanings and she'd like to change that. The Solution Interior designer Lee Snijders develops a plan that will bring the whole room together. His casual contemporary look will be anchored with rich wall color and eclectic wall art and accessories. Jackie's existing dining table and end tables will get a modern makeover, and a cool divider will define the new office area. Here's how they bring the look together.
Design coordinator Charles Burbridge give's Jackie's country-style dining set a funky makeover. He replaces the white-tile top with various brightly-colored ones and paints the table and chairs black for a contemporary update.
Design coordinator Summer Baltzer adds architectural detail to the walls by using decorative molding. She creates frames on each of the walls. After attaching the trim to the wall to form the frame, she paints them all the same beige color as the wall itself. She places vintage-looking artwork within the frames for added impact.
A vibrant geometric area rug defines the seating area in the living room. Red, gray, black and khaki tones tie all the colors together that have been used throughout the space. The new distressed coffee table is the perfect complement to the updated design. New throw pillows coordinate Jackie's existing sofa into the new color palette.
The office space is defined with a bold-red wall. A bulletin board above the desk (figure A) is covered with the same fabric used on the sofa pillows. Charles builds a custom room divider (figure B) to separate the office area from the rest of the room. He makes the piece by building three individual wooden frames, inserting horizontal wooden dowels in each for a ladder effect. He then weaves vinyl strips within the frames to create a basket-weave effect. The frames are attached to one another with hinges, making the finished piece funky and flexible.
New end tables in a rich-espresso hue flank either end of the sofa and are topped with revamped lamps. The once-silver lamps are given a paint treatment to create the look of burnished bronze.
