Kyle and Mary Beth Stadt have heard countless ideas intended to fix their dysfunctional family room. Unfortunately, the ideas weren't clever enough to actually try. Finding solutions that work, designer Karen McAloon uses the Stadts' favorite piece of furniture—a contemporary, black leather couch—as a foundation for the room's style. Painting the walls beige and rearranging the furnishings creates a functional, contemporary family room.

Before: The Hallway Room
This long room connects the kitchen to the master bedroom. Furnishings along the wall make the room feel more like a passageway than a destination. The brick fireplace and 1980s-style ceiling fan date the room. With no window treatments or lighting, the homeowners don't know where to start.
