Fireplace
The homeowner's fireplace was all brick from floor to ceiling. To replicate the half-wall fireplace in the designer room, Jamie builds a box using medium-density fiber board (MDF) to cover up the brick from mantel to ceiling. The cover is fastened to the brick with a masonry bit and special concrete screws. The crown molding in the room is continued around the cover so it will blend seamlessly into the walls. Finally, the cover is painted the same neutral linen color as the walls.

Tip: Using MDF is a great alternative to pure wood. It takes paint really well, has a nice and smooth surface and is very inexpensive.
