Moroccan-Inspired Living Area

Design on a Dime : Episode DOD-1603 -- More Projects »
Now that roommates Crystal and Samantha Pierce and Jonah Bitautas are out of college, they'd like to abandon the dorm-style decor in their apartment. They want a chic Moroccan-inspired oasis, and the Design on a Dime team signs on to create just such a space for less than $1,000.

Before: Washed-out sofas and predominantly white walls made this space everything but exotic.
Photo

After: Bright colors and rich fabrics transform the space into an exotic destination.
The Dilemma
Except for the natural wood and brick accent walls, drab white dominates the space. Seating is a must-have in the room, but the taupe-colored sofa and loveseat have seen better days. The large windows let in lots of light and fresh air but lack a decorative touch. The room's radiator is an eyesore and needs to be camouflaged.

The Solution
Rich golden-colored walls will set the tone for the ethnic theme of the room, and lots of rich fabric will add high-end style. New platform-style seating will create a bohemian ambiance, and new lighting will brighten the space. Creative use of fabric will make the TV disappear when not in use. Here's how the team gets it done.

Interior designer Brice Cooper gets to work on wall art using a '70s-era mural he found while rummaging at the curb. He cuts the mural into three pieces and mounts them to individual frames made from one-by-one inch lumber and pressboard. He attaches the images with spray-on adhesive and then mounts them equidistant to one another along the length of the wall.

Design coordinator Ali Azhar updates a thrift-store cocktail table with mosaic tile. After a fresh coat of stain, he cuts the top surface out of the piece and replaces it with backer board (available at home-improvement stores). He sets the stone with mortar and seals the finished piece to make it stain resistant.

Ali then designs a custom box to conceal the radiator using panels of plywood. He cuts a traditional Moroccan arch shape out of the front panel. He gives the structure a coat of richly-colored stain and inserts a panel of punched tin to further conceal the radiator, while still allowing heat to circulate.

Brice uses the same Moroccan arch shape to liven up the windows. He cuts the shape from two pieces of plywood and mounts the pieces over the windows. He details the finished piece with the golden hue used on the walls. The existing blinds are hung behind the panels, keeping the window easily accessible.

New lamps with sleek modern lines and bright red shades light up the space, while unique accessories tie the whole look together.

Design coordinator Kelly Edwards designs a custom fabric tent using traditional sari fabrics to camouflage the TV. She attaches the fabrics to a decorative metal hoop and suspends it from the ceiling. The TV and all its components get tucked away inside.

New platform-style seating gives the Moroccan theme a touch of modern sophistication. Bright red cushions and lots of colorful pillows in sari fabrics provide a bold punch of color.
