Before: This living room has attractive architectural features; however the coved ceiling is lost in the monotone paint color. The homeowners hope for a comfortable, welcoming and dramatic-looking room with deep, rich colors and a natural feel.

After: White walls create a clean backdrop for minimalist furnishings. The natural color palette is accented with red accessories to pull the eye through the room and warmth exudes from the taupe color that follows down to one foot below the curve of the ceiling.

Before: When pondering the bare living room, the homeowners mention their dream for a fireplace. This small corner doesn't allow for much furniture but could use some interesting furnishings to tie it into the rest of the space.

After: An antique mantel is painted red and attached to a built-out frame to create a faux fireplace. The custom candelabra placed inside brings a warm glow to the room.
New homeowners Matt and Margo Mansfield love their home and historic Phoenix neighborhood, but their stark living room and monstrous green, hand-me-down couch is another matter. Arizona State University design student Paul Hibbard revives the ailing room with a natural color palette. Stylistic dignity is restored with the addition of elegant drapes, a photographic homage to the neighborhood, a faux fireplace and an accentuated coved ceiling. Impressed by the newfound warmth in their hometown-inspired living room, the Mansfields give this design student an "A."
