Elegant and Functional Great Room

This great room needs to be functional and child friendly, but also elegant and sophisticated.

Before: The homeowners think their huge, empty great room could coordinate with the rest of their home better. The furniture is too small for the space and they want to add interest to the walls with artwork and warm colors.

After: The room now incorporates a traditional look based on Empire styling and architectural elements. Dividing the wall space with crown molding brings it down to a more human scale.

Before: The McGraths want to fill their bare dining room with a formal round table and chairs. In addition, they need new window treatments and lighting.

After: The formal gold-painted ceiling and glazed red walls give the dining room its own distinct style, but also complement the decor in the adjacent great room.
Just over a year ago, Robin and Kevin McGrath and their two children moved into a home in Sandy Springs, Ga., a suburb of Atlanta. With 4,000 square feet, the four-bedroom traditional European house is much larger than their previous home and the couple has been busy furnishing the rooms to suit their needs and taste. However, when it comes to the great room and adjacent dining area, the couple is unsure of what to do. With a budget of $40,000, they want the designers to come up with a room that is functional and child friendly, but at the same time, elegant and sophisticated.

After a week of considering the interior designers' plans to turn their huge grand room into a comfortable yet classy space, the homeowners choose Elinor Jones to bring an Old World look to the rooms. By using Empire styling and classic architectural elements, she breaks up the space and brings it down to human scale. The new Roman shades accent the windows without obstructing the view and the old tile fireplace has been replaced with a carved mantel and marble surround. The great room flows perfectly into the new dining room where deep red walls and an elegant formal gold ceiling create an atmosphere of drama and sophistication.
