Bleak to Chic: How Can You Get the Look?

If your room has a high or vaulted ceiling, visually lower it by painting the walls a warm or vibrant color as shown [above]. Choose a hue found in existing furnishings or woodwork. Here soft golden-yellow color-washed walls bring out the richness of the various woods used throughout the rooms. Instead of wall-to-wall carpet, opt for wooden floors. (Or, to reduce costs, install a 2-foot-wide wood plank border around the perimeter of the room and lay carpeting in the middle.) Bring additional color into the room with throw pillows and area rugs. The floral-print dining room rug...brings out the red in the existing earthy terra-cotta tiles and can withstand spills.
