Stylish Conversation Room

Design on a Dime : Episode DOD-802 -- More Projects »

Before: Dual Room Redo
James Mase and Karen White enjoy game time with their toddler and baby in the family room, but they are looking to create a living room and dining room with a unified style and a space for adult conversation. Designer Lee Snijders discovers that the main problems are a lack of seating, mismatched furniture and a lack of coherent style. The couple has a strong distaste for the dining area chandelier as well. Snijders suggests the fireplace should be the focal point as the couple wants to have this room TV-free. Greens and earth tones are their favorite, which will be the perfect colors for a cozy conversation room.

After: Using Color for a Cohesive Design
Snijders, along with design coordinators Summer Baltzer and Charles Burbridge, come up with a design plan and set to work creating the new look. Snijders makes the fireplace a focal point and creates wall sculptures to complement a tranquil wall-mounted fountain. Baltzer uses the maroon found in the current upholstery as a jumping-off point for coordinating colors for window treatments and accent pillows. Read below for more design details.

Furniture - $308

  • New furniture includes an ample-sized sofa and solid-wood coffee table. (coffee table: Cost Plus World Market)

  • The fireplace is made the focal point with a wall-mounted water feature displayed above the mantel. It's flanked with wood and stone sculptures made by Snijders. He cuts the wood pieces, stains them light and dark shades and attaches them with wood screws. He attaches the stones with hot glue and epoxy. (Hot glue is used as a quick set while the epoxy dries). • Burbridge visits a pottery shop where he glazes a large vase in neutral colors. (urn: Color Me Mine - Kentucky Urn CMM84)

  • The team brings in a set of fireplace tools found at a thrift store.

  • The existing chandelier is replaced with a custom fixture with a more contemporary style. First, Burbridge installs a pendant light fixture that hangs from the ceiling. Hickory hoops and reed pieces are glued together to form the shade frame. Brown stain gives it a finish that complements the wood tones in the living room. A paper with a reed cane look is used for the actual shade. He uses this material because not only is it cheaper, it holds its shape well and the ends don't fray. He measures the paper to fit inside the frame, cuts it outs and stitches it in place using a waxed linen cord. A support piece is created for the top to hold it to the hanging pendant. Fabrics - $129

    • Ribbon pillows featuring various colored fabrics help to unify the color scheme. Baltzer cuts the fabrics into 17-inch strips and sews them together, alternating the colors as she goes. Next, she stitches green ribbon directly onto the seams then puts the facing and backing fabric right-sides together and stitches three sides closed. Finally, she turns the fabric inside-out, adds pillow stuffing and stitches the remaining side closed. Also, more of the fabric is used to enhance the existing curtains. Paint Supplies - $75

    • The walls are painted in three different autumnal shades--a rich chocolate brown color, a light sage green color and a warm golden color. (paint: Mark's Paint Store - Benjamin Moore, Rosemary Sprig 2144-30, Java 2106-10, Wilmington Tan HC-34 )
