The Dilemma

Host Lee Snijders visits the guys and finds that while this space is so big, it is still full of unnecessary furniture. Getting rid of an extra couch and an unused piano will help. The enormous dirty area rug will be taken away to reveal the room's beautiful original wood flooring. The tattered and outdated window treatments will have to be replaced as well. Adding lighting will bring more people to the room in the evening and bringing the billiard and dart board accessories to a central location will alleviate clutter and help define the areas within the room.

The Solution

The room is reconfigured into a functional new space fit for the college roommates and their friends--here's how the design team does it:

Two of the walls are painted a golden wheat color to draw attention to the coved ceiling.

  • Design coordinator Charles Burbridge takes on the challenge of making the fireplace the focal point in the large room. The top part is painted a chocolate brown color and the bottom is given a two-part faux finish. The wheat color is applied first, then the brown is mixed one part paint to three parts water and ragged on with a plastic bag.

  • Design coordinator Summer Baltzer is charged with giving all of the different-sized windows a cohesive look. She customizes pre-made denim blue panels with a chocolate-colored fabric band on the bottom of each. She reuses the existing cornice boxes to hide the hardware. The cornice insets are painted the golden wheat color to make them stand out against the white wall.

  • Snijders creates a convenient spot for all of the gaming supplies. He makes a wall-mounted rec board that makes room for the pool cues and dart board and even incorporates a chalkboard where the players can keep score. The piece is created out of 1x4 boards with a 1x8 used for the bottom, which serves as a shelf for pool-playing accessories and the players' drinks. Cork is used behind the dart board to accommodate errant darts. Snijders cuts a notch into one section of the 1x4 board so that he can attach the plastic clips to hold the pool cues. Four barstools set underneath complete the game-playing area.

Here are a few other ideas for custom shades.
  • Burbridge enhances the existing wall sconces with new shades and beaded fringe. He also creates a gold and amber-colored beaded swag that is combined with the existing crystals that hang down beneath the shade.
