Makeover Room, after
Host Brooke Channon visits the global living room created by designer Sharon Daroca, who used custom furnishings and artifacts from around the world to create this elegant traveler’s retreat. A handcrafted African chandelier and a rare Turkish rug help give the space an international flair.

Transforming the Makeover Room

Guest designer Phyllis Bowie helped direct the transformation of a boring nondescript living room into a transcontinental haven by taking the following steps:

  • Painted the wall a warm neutral shade (Benjamin Moore: Light Khaki).

  • Custom painted a rust-colored chandelier with palm leaf accents to mimic Inspiration chandelier.

  • Positioned a red Oriental rug with blue details on the floor.

  • An Indonesian wood carving was placed on top of the mirror to re-create the look of the beveled mirror in the Inspiration Room.

  • The mantel was dressed with orchids and wild grass in colorful cloisonné vases.
  • Placed a plant on top of a pedestal to add height and added a natural colored drum to complete the mantel area.

  • Added one monkey print and one cat print with carved ethnic frames and a lucky frog with a coin to finish the mantel area.

  • Placed an overstuffed couch with vibrant pillows to re-create the look of the Inspiration couch.

  • A coffee table with clean lines and curved legs was dressed with a Chinese wicker planter, a painted Buddha head and an oblong silver box.

  • Two chenille upholstered open wood frame chairs were added for an additional seating area.

  • An antique trunk and a brown suitcase topped with knick-knacks completed the seating area.

  • A seagrass elephant with the perfect scale served as an excellent stand-in for the Inspiration Room’s Ming Dynasty camel.
