Easy Formal Living
Country Style : Episode COS-507 -- More Projects »
Finding the South Carolina coastal town of Habersham was a dream come true for Susan and Brad Johnson. It's a place with all the charm an historic site might offer including friendly neighbors, a town center and grassy parks, but the conveniences are totally modern and allow the Johnsons to have their "old" home look without the worries.
Their house is brand-new but made to look old from the walls to the floors. Walls were given country character with 1x6s butted together for a casual farmhouse look. The whitewash finish allows the graining to show through. The heart of pine floor was distressed with a chain, pitchfork and hammer before it was installed. A coat of stain and a tung oil finish brought out the rustic character of the imperfections.
The color scheme in the living room is a crisp blue and white with black accents. The sofa fabric is an easy-care outdoor upholstery material; blue piping defines the graceful lines of the piece. Slipcovers are used on the throw pillows. The skirted side table looks formal but is actually a plywood base, simply covered with a drape of fabric and a glass top.
