Barn Living

Country Style : Episode COS-506 -- More Projects »

Los Angeles architect Richard Landry, his partner Robert Carolla, and their daughter, Samantha are the inhabitants of a unique home overlooking the Pacific Ocean--it's a barn that was dismantled and transported from Quebec down to its new plot of land in Malibu, California. The wood was used to rebuild the structure but in a contemporary context. The rectangular form is flanked with two silos that contain all of the bathrooms. Various balconies and roof extensions alter the look of the rectangular structure and add character to the simplicity of the home.

Ocean views await guests as they enter the living space.

A sloping lot allowed Carolla to design the house with a grand descending staircase.

Carolla sketched cattails to remind him of the marshlands in his hometown of Quebec.
The home's entry is on the second level, which creates a grand entrance into the main living area below. The south wall is all glass and offers up incredible views of the ocean beyond. The concrete floor contains four different stains for a warm undulation of color. The second-floor guardrail features a stylized motif of cattails. Carolla sketched the design on white paper, scanned it into his computer and sent the file off to a steel shop where they turned his design into a functional work of art.
