Nonfunctional Family Room

Design on a Dime : Episode DOD-308 -- More Projects »
Scott and Rachel Mahler have a multifunctional living space in need of a design makeover. The furniture arrangement isn't working and the lack of color and style are uninspiring. They're hoping the design team can create a casual, elegant look that's comfortable for the entire family.

The Dilemma

Lee Snijders meets with the Mahlers to discuss the issues at hand, which include the furniture arrangement, lack of adequate lighting and mishmash of framed photos on the one long wall. Snijders then meets with Summer Baltzer and Charles Burbridge to come up with a clear design plan and they decide on an inviting French country style for the space. To transform the room, they'll rearrange the furniture, paint the walls a warm color, bring in additional lighting, create child-size furniture for the two children and organize the many framed photos for a more coordinated wall display. The homeowners' Mission-style entertainment center and wood blinds are a plus and will be worked into the design.

The Solution

Here's how the team creates a casual French country design in the multifunctional space:

  • The walls are painted a deep red, then enhanced with a wheat glaze rubbed on for a French country-style faux finish.

  • The furniture is rearranged to maximize the large room. The sofa is brought out into the center of the space facing the entertainment center on one wall.

  • Over the dining table, Baltzer creates a hanging light fixture out of a copper pot. She drills a hole into the center, attaches a light kit, then hangs it from the ceiling with a hook and chain.

  • Snijders paints generic white wall sconces to match the French country design. He paints the arms with a copper spray paint, then finishes them with a sage green and beige paint. The sconces are placed strategically around the room for ambient lighting.

  • Burbrudge uses plain wood picture frames and white acid-free mounting board to organize the family's many photos. He stains the wood frames to match the other furniture pieces in the room and wraps the mounting board with beige linen fabric to match the French-country decor.

  • As a final touch, Baltzer adds a punch of color to the dining space with seat cushions and a table runner.
