Country Style : Episode COS-206 -- More Projects »
So much of the fun of country design is using your imagination. With a clever new color palette and a little personal flair, you can create just about any look you want. Designer and stylist Carol Hicks Bolton used her knack for decorating to create the charming tropical look in her North Carolina bungalow. Combining old with new, she used everything from family heirlooms to pieces from her own furniture line to make a cozy and comfortable family retreat.

The pillows on the sofas and chairs are mostly made of old fabrics and accented with vintage buttons and new trims.

Blended materials make up the window treatments and no two windows are dressed alike. Twisted wire (thread through a pocket on the fabric) and old doorknobs replace traditional curtain hardware. Other windows are dressed with fishnets and a child's grass skirt.

The walls are covered with framed maps with wires stretched across the front, a look that Hicks Bolton discovered on a trip to Rome. She says it's just a fun extra detail that adds dimension and provides a place to hang small accessories, like old key rings.

The long table is perfect for gatherings with friends and family. Mismatched chairs add a touch of nostalgia.
