Figure A
Joan Steffend visits an artistic homeowner who has decorated her home with many creative handmade elements. She shares some of her decorating solutions:
  • She replaced the side boards in a traditional 1950s hutch with glass panels so that her ceramic art can be seen from all sides.
  • Her $1,700 designer sofa was purchased for only $300 because it was missing the left arm return.
  • White panels dress the wall-to-wall windows in the living room, however, she painted the rod and added custom clay finials to dress it up. In the dining room, she created a non-traditional valance to bridge the gap between the two panels (figure A).

Figure B
  • In the master bedroom addition, she installed salvaged French doors and painted them with a colorful blue wash to coordinate with the drapes.
  • She couldn't find the right light fixture, so she bought a standard fixture and gave it a creative paint finish (figure B). She added a patina to the bright gold shade, bent copper wire and attached it randomly on the shade and added beads and glass for extra sparkle.
