Designer Ann Sundet joins host Joan Steffend for the redo of a living room for recent college graduates. The three girls have a roomful of hand-me-downs from their mothers that looks cluttered and mismatched. By adding color on the walls and with upholstery, and removing some of the furniture, the two designers create an interesting and sophisticated space perfect for entertaining. The walls are painted a warm gold, with a deeper shade of gold used for accent touches in alcoves, for trim, and around the fireplace. Tailored green valances are hung from drapery rods over the three windows using drapery stiffener and double -sided Velcro. A lavish floral slipcover covers one chair and is secured to the ottoman with gold cording. The mirror over the fireplace is framed with lightweight plastic moulding and corner rosettes painted gold and glued into place. The old radiator is painted the wall color and turned into extra seating with the addition of a 1' x 12' plank edged with a 1" x 2" piece of trim, and covered with three foam pillows. A simply constructed fold-down shelf is painted the wall color to disappear when not in use.
