The Problem
Tom and Sherri De Luca want to make sure that their study fits in with the light, bright Mediterranean design of their home. They want a designer who will come up with a plan for privacy and utility, without interrupting the open flow and contemporary feel of the house.
First, the design team of Helene Lotto and Holly Higbee-Jansen Next, interior designer David Dalton Finally, designer Demitri Sgourakis.
The Designers
The design team of Helene Lotto and Holly Higbee-Jansen specializes in remodeling, construction and environmental interior design. They see a neoclassical decor with French doors separating the study from the foyer.
David Dalton, who has recently introduced his own collection of custom furniture, visualizes a subtly elegant room with low contrast colors and simple lines defined by texture and finish.
A graduate of New York's Fashion Institute of Technology, Demitri Sgourakis takes a modernist approach to interior design. He visualizes a traditional paneled study with some decidedly nontraditional touches.
The Choice
Faced with a tough choice, Tom and Sherri go with designer Demitri Sgourakis. With that decision made, it's time to shop for the furnishings that will make the plans come alive, beginning with the heart of the room, the fireplace. Meanwhile at home, construction begins on the study.
The Result
The DeLucas' front room has undergone a dramatic transformation, from a stark, empty open space into a warm, cozy, comfortable room for working and relaxing. The maple grain of the new paneling highlights the rich mix of woods in the room, including a mahogany desk for Tom and an antique teak amoire for the television. It also serves as a perfect backdrop for the new stone fireplace, which replaces the old concrete and marble facade. The sitting area rests on a jeweled-toned, floral pattern rug, which brings a touch of color into the room and features an eclectic mix of furniture styles in a variety of natural materials anchored with a grand leather sofa and side chair. Sgourakis rose brilliantly to meet the design challenge and created an elegant, sophisticated study out of an empty front room that this couple will enjoy for years to come.
