Creative Stockings
Your Holiday Home : Episode YHH-107 -- More Projects »
Pete Nelson from the Design Group shares some ingenious ideas for creating unique stockings.
Figure A--This clever stocking is actually baby bibs with the legs removed and the bottom sewn up. A big trend for the holidays is to give stockings as gifts, and this would make a perfect gift for someone who has a new baby. The embellishments are cute Christmas patches with jingle bells on the pockets. The bibs are hanging on a children's wall hanging and can be filled with trinkets or personalized by simply sewing a name on the front.
Figure B--Instead of using a foot stocking, this is a stocking from a hat--a stacking cap to be exact. The cap is turned upside-down with pompon ribbon around the edging and has a loop attached with which to hang it. Wooden ornaments hang from the edging and jingle bells are added to the bottom fringes. This makes a wonderful container for gifts, candies or holiday greeting cards.
Figure C--This stocking is, incredibly, an old window screen that has been cut into the shape of a stocking, painted gold and threaded around the edges to keep it together. The snowman and snowflakes are painted on with craft paint and embellished with sequins. Be sure to paint the entire stocking first and allow to dry before adding further decorations, or just leave the screen pieces a holiday silver.
Figure D--A see-through stocking can be the perfect gift for a child or teenager. This stocking is made from vinyl material that is available at any craft store. A hole punch was used to poke holes along the perimeter. The stocking is held together by plastic lining that is woven through the holes. Colorful beads hang from the plastic lining loop that serves as a hanger, and wild, vibrant presents help deliver the holiday joy from the inside out.
Figure E--Although more of a traditional stocking, this store-bought stocking was embellished to bring out the elegance of the season. Different lengths and widths of ribbon with trinkets attached transform a simple stocking into a rich, new addition to the hearth.
Figure F--Believe it or not, but this functional stocking is an embellished tool belt. Papier mache is added to the strap, while packages, pencils and other unique ornaments give the belt a life it never knew it had. Fill this stocking with small hardware items and give it to the handyman or woman in your life.
