Downsizing to a smaller home can be a real challenge. You have less space, but you still need room for your favorite things. Meet Darwin Otto and Brent Heeb--two guys with this same problem. They traded in their big old 1920s house for a smaller, newer model. Being avid antique collectors, this could have been a problem; but the high ceilings and white walls proved to be the perfect canvas for starting over.
The living room is awash in color and set against the white backdrop, it only makes the hues more vivid. In the seating area, a red linen-covered sofa anchors the room. A side chair next to it is upholstered in an old coverlet that features a strong floral pattern in navy blue. Above the fireplace is a piece of Picasso-inspired artwork painted by their young grandson. Opposite the sofa is a pink seed cabinet that's now used for general storage; on top is an eye-catching vignette of three tiny pink chairs and two lamps made out of plant stands found in Mexico. The shades are made of material from an old quilt. Behind the seating area is a bright blue hutch from Czechoslovakia that was once used in a kitchen--here, it's repurposed into storage for stereo equipment. In a small room like this, furniture needs to be dual-purpose. Two tables that do the trick are a tall coffee table that's also used as a game table and side table. Another piece that works overtime is the sofa table, which can easily be pulled out and dressed for an elegant dinner.
