Nicole and Marc Lombardi love to cook but hate their kitchen. The poor layout, duct-taped floor and mismatched countertops and cabinets are downright embarrassing. They need a kitchen that reflects their style and gives them room to cook.

The Lombardis have $35,000-$45,000 to spend on this renovation. The Spice Up My Kitchen team offers them two options, both of which include a new layout, upgraded cabinets and countertops and a space for Nicole's favorite find, her copper sink.

Option 1:

In the first option, designer Lauren Lake offers the Lombardis oak cabinets with a warm, honey finish topped with natural stone counters. The appliances would be integrated to match the cabinets; a beadboard backsplash and earth-toned ceramic floor would complete this cozy, comfortable look.

Option 2:

Option 2 also offers a new layout, with maple cabinets in a natural finish. Laminate counters, a tile backsplash and a faux wood floor leave a big chunk of the budget for high-end appliances.

The Lombardis choose Option 2 because it gives them the new layout and cabinets they need, and the high-end appliances they crave.

Wow! Talk about a kitchen with no flow. This cobbled-together, mismatched space turns family time into a hockey game, pitting the Lombardis against each other as they try to stir a pot on the stove or wash dishes in the crammed-in-the-corner sink. To make things worse, the floor and walls are held together by two types of tape and when it peels up, you can see the "lasagna" of floor or wallpaper beneath. Say arrivederci to this old kitchen!
