Old World Style

Kitchen Design : Episode KDE-1213 -- More Projects »
Host Joan Kohn tours the generously sized kitchen in Julia Frisoli’s 15,000-square-foot Old World style lake home. Architect Melia Strittmatter designed a highly functional work space that combines beautiful materials and finishes, and uses architectural detailing to make the large space feel inviting.

The kitchen is entered through an archway that softens the large space. The limestone floor repeats the curve of the arch as it dies into the wood floor of the family room.

The curved outer island separates the kitchen from the family room, while the wineglass rack over it shields the family room from a view of the large vent over the center island.

An arched triple window in the sink area limits the amount of upper cabinets in the kitchen.

The center work island is faux-painted to match the limestone floor.
  • The kitchen is U-shaped with a central work island and curved outer island used to separate the kitchen from the family room. The recessed panel cherry cabinetry has a medium stain and hand-carved details and ornamentation. The counters are dark brown granite, and the floors are limestone. The sinks and cooker are stainless, while the dishwasher and refrigerator have cabinetry panels that make them look built-in.
  • The main work island houses a large stainless steel cooktop. The light colored cabinetry is tied to the cherry perimeter cabinetry with cherry turnings at the corners that give it a furniture look.
  • The curved outer island has a hammered nickel sink and a small refrigerator and is topped with a wineglass rack and greenery that interrupts the view of the stove hood from the family room.
  • The butler’s pantry is more formal and provides a transitional space into the very formal dining room.
  • Floor-to-ceiling pull-out pantries provide double-sided shallow storage close to the eating areas.
