Cutting Edge Cabinetry
Kitchen Design : Episode KDE-1110 -- More Projects »
The design ideology that drives the look of contemporary kitchens is that style and function are one. The result is a streamlined look, devoid of ornamentation and molding. Host Joan Kohn visits the design experts to explore some of the latest options in contemporary cabinetry.
- There are two types of cabinetry used for contemporary kitchens: built-in and modular.
- Built-in cabinetry is usually done in long, uniform runs for a streamlined look that creates ample work surfaces.
- Modular cabinetry is installed on a wall panel and floats above the floor. It can be done in segments, such as a sink segment or cooking segment. Customizing the final product is easy with modular units.
- Materials have center stage in contemporary kitchens, since there is no ornamentation to distract the eye. Popular choices are natural-finish wood and stainless steel. Other options include plastic veneer and lacquer finish, both of which can introduce vivid color into the design scheme.
- Surfaces are often highly polished in contemporary kitchens, whether it is a gleaming metal range hood, a shining granite countertop, or sparkling glass panels in the cabinetry.
- Hardware is used as an accent in contemporary cabinetry and is a wonderful way to add personality and whimsy. Brushed metal is popular, as are long, sleek pulls.
- Some cabinetry uses recessed pulls, which eliminates hardware and instead uses channels or holes cut into the panel so the panel is completely flush.
