Working within the limited space of a downtown brownstone, architect David Andreozzi and designer Jef Bates worked in tandem to create a state-of-the art contemporary kitchen. Using period design elements and an exacting attention to detail, the result is a surprisingly warm and informal kitchen.

  • The large room was divided into a family room and kitchen. What sets the two rooms apart are the ceilings and a wooden archway. The family room features the original plaster ceiling and a metal ceiling was installed in the kitchen. An open archway helps to further delineate the space.
  • The open floor plan in the kitchen is based on a simple galley design with two distinct areas--one for cooking and the other for preparation.
  • The kitchen cabinetry imitates the furniture pieces in the family room to make the two spaces feel more cohesive.
  • Cabinets are made of Honduran mahogony and the countertops are a distinctive striped granite. Stainless steel appliances, an underpin sink and nickel faucets are used as a neutral and put the cabinets and countertops on display.
  • Porcelain and brass pulls play off the granite countertops.
