Figure C
So often we think of country design as being purely American, but there's also an exciting international flavor that can take us around the world. Accented with the flavor of old Cuba, the kitchen of interior designers Vernays Rodriquez and Jose Cabaleero is the perfect gathering spot for family and friends.
  • Weathered brick was used to cover the damaged wood floor.
  • A ragged-on paint finish and fabric inserts combine for a rustic look on the original cabinets (figure A). The same floral print cotton fabric is used inside the glass-front cabinets on top.
  • Ornate wicker chairs surround a weathered farmhouse-style table. The tabletop is made from salvaged oak planks set on carved mahogany ball and claw legs.
  • The kitchen walls were treated with a plaster finish and made to look warm with a sandy colored dye added to the plaster mix (figure B).
  • The robin's egg color on the dining room walls is a common look in Mediterranean country homes echoing the sea and sky (figure C). Architecturally, this room draws its influence from Moorish Spain, with original arches, thick masonry walls and rope columns.
