Host Joan Kohn visits the 1920 Spanish style home of Nick and Pam Thiel. The couple improved on an inconvenient floor plan, which had the bedroom adjacent to the kitchen , by adding a second story that relocated the bedroom upstairs and opened the kitchen to the new family room, formerly the bedroom.

  • A raised ceiling with dark beams in the new section of the kitchen make the small room feel larger. A large copper hood that fills the large space is one of the room's focal points.
  • Rich textures, such as distressed maple cabinetry, and limestone for the backsplash , counter and floors, and rich earth colors give the kitchen an Old World look.
  • Cabinetry has an unfitted look, with open shelving, a dish rack, hutch and hanging copper pots.
  • Stainless-steel appliances add a modern touch.
  • The informal white porcelain farm sink has old-fashioned unfinished faucets that develop a wonderful aged patina.
  • The limestone backsplash in a soft beige has hand-made French tile insets. The earth-colored limestone flooring is accented with soft beige insets.
