Big and Little Changes

Kitty Bartholomew: You're Home : Episode KIT-1108 -- More Projects »
Contractor Lorrie Webb has remodeled many homes over the years, but her own home turned out to be quite a challenge! It had been for sale for a long time because it was small and in terrible condition. The main attraction was that the house was on a hill with a great view, but the big drawback was that it needed major foundation work. She knew that it could be fixed, so she bought the house and brought in designer Kenneth Brown to begin making some big changes that included adding 160 square feet to the 1,500-square-foot home to accommodate a new kitchen.

A silver-leafed plywood "shelf" above the dining table takes the place of a traditional chandelier. Recessed lighting creates a glowing effect on the ceiling. Brown used premade silver leaf paper instead of gilding the wood by hand.

The sofa is covered in a pale blue wool that is so shiny it looks like silk. Lacquered tables and modern artwork combine for a classy, refined look.

To save money, the fireplace was faced with 16" x 16" honed travertine tile squares instead a large piece of prefabricated slab. The mantel is a simple unfinished shelf stained dark to match the floors and contrast with the travertine.

Brown focused on a square furniture shape in the master bedroom from the headboard to the side table knobs. The soft sheen of the fabrics and muted colors create a calming effect.

Gray limestone cut into 9" x 16" rectangular tiles covers the floor.

The kitchen walls are tiled with painted glass. Brown painted the back side of the glass, cut it to brick size and applied it to the wall with mastic.
