Glass front cabinets keep the small room from feeling too closed in and provide wonderful display for a vintage glass collection.
Host Joan Kohn visits the condominium of Barb Bernard, who redecorated her small kitchen with the help of her father. Since standard cabinets were too large, Bernard's father custom-built cabinets to fit the tight spaces. Bold color and maximized storage make the new kitchen efficient and attractive.
  • A number of clever design choices make the small kitchen seem larger: custom cabinets that make use of every inch of space are outfitted with glass front panels , which lighten the look; a light-colored stain used on the cabinets also keeps the room from feeling closed in; cabinets extend to the ceiling for maximum storage; a simple gray tile floor adds texture without busy pattern; the countertops are a deep shade of gray that complements the blue walls and coordinates with the floor.
  • Bold blue walls make a dramatic statement, but since the amount of wall space is so limited, the color doesn't darken or overwhelm the space. The color makes a wonderful background for the display of several collections.
  • A stove with oven replaced the wall oven. Much-needed floor-to-ceiling cabinetry fills the space now.
  • A microwave was installed over the stove, freeing up counter space. Under-counter appliances also maximize precious counter space.
  • Fluorescent lighting was replaced with a narrow-width ceiling fan and light.
