Kitchen Design : Episode KDE-305 -- More Projects »
Host Joan Kohn visits the historic home of Michael and Constance Bignell, built in 1775. The kitchen and keeping room, just a few steps down from the kitchen, were once part of the servants' quarters. Great care was taking during renovations to make the new kitchen fit seamlessly with the rest of the home.

The large fireplace in the keeping room was outfitted with a wood stove for efficiency. The wood stairs in the corner lead up to the master bedroom.

The brightly painted cabinetry that houses the TV in the keeping room has rat-tail hinges that date to the 18th century.
  • White glass-front cabinets have an appropriate vintage look, although they are new. The glass front allows for the display of the owner's collection of colorful egg cups.
  • Since space in the kitchen was limited, angled corners were used to allow for the installation of lazy susans that increase storage capacity.
  • The tiles behind the cooktop were originally leaned against the wall for a trial period. This arrangement proved to be so easy for cleaning that they were never installed.
  • The glass cooktop has a halogen burner for instant heat. The vent overhead , dressed with a panel that matches cabinetry, can be pulled out when in use and retracted when not in use.
  • A warming drawer and a three-function oven (regular, convection and microwave) take care the of the rest of cooking needs in a compact space.
  • The refrigerator sits flush with cabinetry and has a matching panel so that it blends with the rest of the cabinetry, making the room seem less chopped up.
  • The keeping room, which was originally used as the winter kitchen, is just a few steps down from the kitchen, and is where the family spends the most time. It is equipped with a television and wood-burning stove.
