Host Joan Kohn visits artist Deanna Schwartzberg, who used a neutral black and white background for her kitchen, zinging up the decor with brightly colored accessories . She demonstrates how easy it is to paint wood chairs and stools in vibrant colors .
Materials:
unfinished wood stool
0000 sandpaper
rag
plastic
clear wood sealer
acrylic paint in a tube
gloss medium
matte medium
water
wide artist's brush
varnish
Steps:
Note: Use the same tones (light, medium, dark) when painting furniture to keep them compatible. For her kitchen, Schwartzberg painted the outside trim and legs of chairs the same dark color, and used different medium-toned paint for seats and backs. Two colors of paint were used to achieve the seat and back colors.
- Start with a good quality, unfinished wood stool. Sand lightly with 0000 sand paper and dust off with rag.
- Apply a coat of clear wood sealer.
- Paint the legs with a dark acrylic paint, used right out of the tube. When dry , cover with plastic to protect while painting the seat.
- Mix the first layer of paint using bright green acrylic paint directly from the tube (figure A). Combine equal amounts of gloss medium and matte medium in a jar and add a small amount to the green paint, along with a dab of water.
- Apply paint to stool seat, brushing on in the same direction as the wood grain (figure B).
- Allow to dry for about 10 minutes.
- Sand lightly with 0000 steel wool and dust off.
- Mix second color the same way as the first, using a bright apple green acrylic paint (figure C).
- Apply a thin coat of the second color and dry.
- Seal with two coats of varnish for a hard finish (figure D).
