Artwork replaces the upper cabinetry. A large corner window, which is fixed for safety reasons around the stove, lets in abundant natural light.

The large center island anchors the room. Its oversized legs conceal plumbing for the prep sink.

The adjacent dining room seems to float, surrounded on three sides by glass.
  • With its light walls and dark wood, inviting fireplace and comfortable chairs, the space has the look and feel of an old pub. A large skylight crossed with steel beams brightens the whole area.
  • The kitchen cabinetry has the look of furniture. The lower cabinets are mahogany , finished in a simple Shaker style. The island resembles a Chippendale table with hidden drawers for cutlery. Its massive legs hide the plumbing for the preparation sink.
  • No upper cabinetry was used to enhance the furniture look. A pullout butcher block opposite the large island provides extra workspace when needed.
  • The appliances, which include a downdraft stove, microwave, 30-inch refrigerator and wine cooler, are scaled down, since this is a second home.
