Floor Painting
Kitchen Design : Episode KDE-303 -- More Projects »
Host Joan Kohn joins Sam Robinson of The Valley Craftsmen and artist Kate Hickey to learn about the process of creating painted wood flooring. Painted wood floors are a beautiful way to define a room and add color and pattern without adding another material. Designs can be added either with layers of stain, or with acrylic or latex paint.
Steps:
- To create a design on a wood floor, first create a stencil. Trace a design onto a thin sheet of mylar with pencil. Using a stencil burner, trace the pattern (figure A). The burner simply melts the Mylar for a clean edged cut (figure B).
Use spray adhesive, which remains sticky for days and can be moved a number of times, and spray the shiny side of the Mylar. Let rest for a few seconds before attaching to wood surface in the correct position. With a stencil brush, swirl on paint (figure C). The paint should be applied lightly (not opaque.) Try using the "come and go" method of stenciling, where the paint is darker at the edges of the stencil and fades in the middle. To add detail and movement, shade the outside edges of the pattern with a darker paint (figure D).
