Host Joan Kohn joins architects Claudia Skylar and Jim Mastro for a tour of their open, airy kitchen full of artistic touches. They note since their kitchen has no recognizable style, it will never go out of style. They wanted a "wow!" look that wasn't cold or intimidating. The creative use of color and materials as well as attention to each detail makes the room beautiful and highly functional, an inviting gathering spot for family and friends.
- Cabinets are done in two colors. They are white oak with either a sheer white or sheer turquoise stain. Some are finished with glass fronts, and combined with a simple Shaker style, they look like windows.
- The large island dominates the kitchen as a work, play, entertaining and food preparation space. It is topped with indestructible granite.
- Color is used playfully: in tiles ribbons in the black and white floor, in the two colors of cabinets, in the tile back splash on the wall of windows, in the seating at the table.
- The large Aga cooker uses radiant heat. It is centered in a hearth tiled with black and white tiles. Cabinets on either side have no doors, for open shelving for pots and pans.
- Two dishwashers are on either side of the sink. Skylar notes they cost about the same as cabinetry of the same size,
- The charming garage, which is visible through the patio doors, is finished with gables, windows and attractive siding.
