The customized kitchen uses a large island and open shelving to create an informal, highly functional space.
Host Joan Kohn visits architect Malcolm Morris to tour his renovated kitchen, which was done on a budget with great style. The original kitchen was nonexistent, just an open space with appliances. The new one eliminates traditional finishes and trims for a unique, customized look .
  • Traditional cabinets were not used, in part to save money, but also to keep everyday utensils easily available. Open shelving on the center island stores most of the dishes and glassware.
  • The unusually shaped island is placed on an angle and provides the main work space in the room. The silver barstools with their ornate pedestals were antique store finds, refurbished and reupholstered.
  • Traditional finishing work was eliminated. The brick walls were left exposed, as were metal conduits, and doors and windows and doors were not trimmed out. This unpolished look creates a tie to the building's past. It also saves money.
  • Lighting for the kitchen, operated on a dimmer, is made from components from the hardware: telephone cable, metal clips and exposed bulbs.
  • Morris advises clients that when designing their kitchen, they shouldn't try to reproduce what they see in a magazine or home, but analyze the elements they like and use that as a starting point to customize and personalize their space.
