Host Joan Kohn visits with Chris Mian of Louis Mian Stone Fabrications to learn about the latest finishes and edge details available for stone surfaces in the kitchen . - Granite has consistent speckled or solid coloring. It can be polished or honed , which gives a matte finish.
- Marble has classic colors and beautiful veining. More porous than granite, it is more difficult to maintain.
- Other natural stones include slate, limestone and soapstone. With new fabrication techniques, these materials can also be shaped into sinks.
- Natural stone is used most often for countertops, but is also being used more frequently for backsplashes and full-height backsplashes, which go all the way to the bottom of the cabinets.
- Polished finishes, which are the most popular, are appropriate for traditional and contemporary kitchens. Honed finishes work well with more rustic country and vintage looks. They are more susceptible to staining, however. New finishes are available that add texture, or combine texture with a matte finish.
- Many options are available for edge treatments:
- square edge, which is usually eased at the top and bottom for a softer look and feel
- fully rounded bull-nose
- half bull-nose, which is rounded only at the top
- ogee, which slopes down then rises to a soft curve on the bottom.
- The smaller the kitchen, the thinner and more simple the edge should be. Larger kitchens can handle thicker, more complicated edges.
