The wall ovens and extra sink have their own corner of the kitchen apart from the cooktop, refrigerator and sink.

Host Joan Kohn visits Susan and Scott O'Connell for a tour of their renovated kitchen . Borrowing space from two adjacent bedrooms and removing the walls separating them from the old kitchen resulted in a large, open working kitchen that shares space with the family room. Susan's brother, Tom Parker of Parker Builders, helped renovate the rooms.

  • Working on a budget, the O'Connells shopped around until they found a cabinetmaker to make their cabinets for a fraction of the price of cabinets bought from the manufacturer.
  • Priorities in the budget were an extra large refrigerator, a five-burner cooktop and double wall ovens.
  • The dark wood floors were replaced with lighter oak floors.
  • A happy collection of Mexican suns provide the backbone of the design scheme in the kitchen and throughout the house.
