Oak cabinets, a soapstone sink and wood flooring help the kitchen blend gracefully with the 1892 period home.
An entire wall is devoted to storage with quarter-sawn custom oak cabinets.
Host Joan Kohn visits the renovated kitchen of Kate Kush, who lives in an 1892 Colonial revival period home. The goal of the renovation was to create a period look that blended with the rest of the home, replacing the modern white kitchen in the home when she bought it.
The architect recommended the cost-saving strategy of having the cabinet company help design the layout of cabinets. Their services are less expensive than the architect's and they helped Kush customize with features like spice racks and in-drawer knife storage. The cabinets flanking the windows were given glass panels, while the rest of the cabinets were done in oak panels.
Quarter-sawn oak was chosen for cabinets for its period look.
The walls were tiled with white subway tiles.
Soapstone counters and sink add to the period look.
