The dual height counter, which separates the kitchen from the eating area, includes bookshelves down low and wine storage up high.
Host Joan Kohn visits the renovated kitchen of Judy Banker Merhling, who gutted three rooms in her Tudor style home to create a spacious kitchen area, breakfast nook and mudroom. The functional room, flooded with natural light, is a comfortable and inviting place for visiting with the grandchildren.
  • Black and white ceramic tile, laid on the diagonal, is a dramatic background for the painted white cabinets and green ceramic tile counters.
  • The cabinets are dressed with distressed pewter pulls from England.
  • The kitchen is designed around the highly functional U-shape, which makes it convenient to reach the three main work areas--stove, refrigerator, sink--and creates plenty of free counter space.
  • The stove is a professional, five-burner stainless steel unit. The sink, ovens and refrigerator are also stainless steel.
  • The kitchen has three kinds of lighting: recessed cans for general illumination , under-cabinet lights (which show off the tile counters) and a chandelier over the teak table. Large windows in the breakfast area are another important light source.
