Mono-rail stainless-steel track lighting can be shaped and sized to fit any space.

Host Joan Kohn visits with John Maria of Design Lighting and Electrical Supply to learn about the ins and outs of planning kitchen lighting.

  • Start with the general lighting and decide what type of effect is desired.
  • Try to include lighting requirements early in the planning stages to ensure electrical needs are met.
  • Use lighting to emphasize the room's features. Think about lighting kick spaces , artwork, under and above the cabinets, inside cabinets, and any architectural element, such as a niche. Lighting must be carefully planned for high or unusual ceilings.
  • Lighting choices include under-cabinet lighting with halogen "hockey pucks," or cooler-burning xenon bulbs, mono-rail track lighting, soffit lighting, track lighting with spots, recessed lighting and pendant lights.
