Dinkel furnished the breakfast nook with an antique settle table, a built-in bench and a pair of wicker chairs. The various colors help create an eclectic feel.
One of the most popular color schemes in country design is blue and white. Often that means using blue as an accent against a white background. Kathryn Dinkel, an interior designer on Shelter Island, New York, shares how she has put a bold twist on that idea in her country kitchen.
  • Dinkel chose the strong blue color because it contrasted beautifully with the crisp white woodwork. The abundance of natural light also helps to lighten the dark space.
  • The mantel on the stovetop hood is used to display a collection of blue and white dinnerware. It also doubles as a shelf for vases of flowers. She placed a headboard upside-down on the top of the mantel for further interest.
  • The breakfast nook is defined by the dropped ceiling, which is covered in white beadboard.
